Writing a recipe by hand
Updated 2026-07-06

Sometimes the recipe is only in your head, or you just want full control over every field. Write it out gives you a blank recipe form to fill in yourself. It works with no internet connection, so you can build a recipe on a plane or in a kitchen with no signal.

Open a blank recipe

From the Add button, choose Write it out. Tradish opens an empty form with room for everything a recipe needs:

  • Title
  • Category
  • Difficulty
  • Prep time and cook time
  • Servings
  • Ingredient groups, so you can split, say, the sauce from the base
  • Step groups, for recipes with distinct stages
  • Notes
  • Tags
  • Source

Fill in as much or as little as you like. You can always come back and add the rest later.

Ingredient and step groups

Groups keep longer recipes readable. Instead of one long list, you can label a set of ingredients "For the marinade" and another "For the salad," and do the same with steps. It mirrors how a recipe card is usually laid out, so it stays easy to follow when you cook.

The paste shortcut

You do not have to type everything by hand. Inside the form there is a paste shortcut: if you already have the full recipe as text, from an email, a note, or a message, paste it in and Tradish structures it for you, sorting it into the title, ingredients, and steps.

This is the fastest way to enter a recipe someone texted you or one you copied from a document. Paste, let Tradish organize it, then tidy up any fields it split differently than you would.

Save it to a cookbook

When the form looks right, save the recipe and pick which cookbook it belongs in. Because you built it yourself, there is no parsing to double check, though you can keep editing it any time.

Editing later

Everything you enter here stays editable. If you leave a field blank now and want to fill it in after your first cook, just reopen the recipe. See Editing a recipe for a full tour of the recipe form and every field you can change.
